Cardio-Pulmonary Stress Testing Course

Chronic diseases affect more than 5 million Portuguese, with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases accounting for approximately 2/5 of the annual mortality in Portugal. Morbidity frequently and inexorably undermines autonomy, social participation, and quality of life. These facts are sufficient condition and claim the development of knowledge and skills to assess and intervene in the context of cardiopulmonary health. O cardio-pulmonary stress test course intends to train and specialize professionals to intervene, making a difference, through a specialized exercise, for people.

Cardio-pulmonary stress tests have, in many cases, a determining role in the diagnosis, prevention, stratification and risk as a function of the characterization of the response to exercise of different cardiac, pulmonary and metabolic parameters. Evaluating and measuring cardio-pulmonary function parameters under the circumstances of physical exercise provides and enables health and sports science professionals to intervene safely and effectively. The focus is precisely on the need to intervene in the context of cardiopulmonary and metabolic function, to mitigate morbidity and mortality associated with and/or dependent on sedentary lifestyle, respiratory, cardiovascular, and metabolic diseases, and, above all, to improve individual and social indicators of well-being and health.

The Cardio-Pulmonary Stress Testing Course offers you an educational and training context, theoretical and practical, led by clinicians with different and complementary specialties that, as a whole, enable you to assimilate, retain, and apply a set of knowledge and skills that prepare you to implement assessments in public and private services and/or units.

The Cardio-Pulmonary Stress Testing Course was developed on and a technical scientific reference of 360 degrees, which prepare you to know how to do, communicate and apply to a multitude of clinical contexts, health and sports. Thus, the course program supports advanced learning about cardiorespiratory physiology, methodological rigor and techniques of cardiopulmonary assessment, metabolic, cardiovascular and ventilatory responses and limitations to progressive exercise, interpretation of tests, preparation of reports and discussion of clinical cases of the most frequent and/or serious cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

The programmatic contents were detailed and thoroughly selected to add to the context of action of health professionals and sports science professionals, without unnecessary "fat" or redundancies. The main purpose is to objectively train for the application of cardiopulmonary exercise testing in the context of the competencies that arise from the graduate training of students and professionals in sports science and medical sciences.

Welcome to the Academia Clínica Espregueira.

OBJECTIVES

  Differentiate and evaluate normal and pathological findings frequent in cardio-pulmonary stress testing;
  Interpret and evaluate the behavior of variables during cardio-pulmonary stress tests;
  Organize and develop objective and intelligible reports;
  Discuss and evaluate case studies in light of biological individuality, training effect in different circumstances, and varied clinical cases;
  Implement cardio-pulmonary stress tests in a practical context and evaluate the results obtained.

  • Physicians specializing in Sports Medicine, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Anesthesiology, and other specialists with intervention in the technical and scientific context of the course.
  • Cardiopneumologists.

The final classification in the course will result from the quantitative classification obtained by the final exam. The assessment comprises the answers to a 20-question multiple-choice exam. Each correct answer contributes 1 point to the final classification. The exam will be held at the end of the course.

The final evaluation of each course is expressed through a classification on a numerical scale from 0 to 20 points, with approval being considered as obtaining a minimum of 10 points.

The final classification of the course can be accompanied by a qualitative mention, expressed on the following scale: Sufficient (10 to 13), Good (14 and 15), Very Good (16 and 17) and Excellent (18 to 20).

According to the Portuguese legislation (DL 42/2005 of 22 February), grades below 10, on a scale from 0 to 20, imply failure.
At the end of the course, an evaluation instrument will be applied to measure the participants’ satisfaction with the training process and the conditions for carrying out the course, aiming at possible improvement actions.

At the end of the course, a Professional Training Certificate will be issued, in accordance with current legislation (Ordinance No. 474/2010 of 8 July), to all participants who successfully complete the vocational training. This certificate, as well as a diploma, will be made available in digital format in the participant’s area, on the EMSaúde website, within a maximum period of 30 working days, after the end date of the course. If the student does not succeed, a Certificate of Attendance in Vocational Training will be issued.
