{"id":32587,"date":"2019-06-21T16:31:26","date_gmt":"2019-06-21T15:31:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.academiaclinicadragao.com\/uncategorized\/retensionamento-meniscal\/"},"modified":"2019-06-21T16:31:26","modified_gmt":"2019-06-21T15:31:26","slug":"retensionamento-meniscal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.academiaclinicadragao.com\/en\/envelhecimento\/retensionamento-meniscal\/","title":{"rendered":"Retensioning and centering of the subluxated meniscus - meniscal \"autotransplantation\", a new surgical technique"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Meniscus Subluxation Retensioning: \"Autotransplant\" \/ Meniscal Retention<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Jo\u00e3o Espregueira-Mendes, Renato Andrade, Lu\u00eds Silva, Bruno Pereira, <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Nuno Sevivas, Ricardo Bastos<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clinicaespregueiramendes.com\">Dragon Clinic - Espregueira-Mendes Sports Centre - FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence<\/a><\/strong> is an international reference center in the treatment of meniscal and cartilage injuries, being a <a href=\"https:\/\/cartilage.org\/centers_of_excellence\/teaching-centres-overview\/\">center of excellence of the <strong>ICRS - International Cartilage Regeneration &amp; Joint Preservation Society<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 In order to provide better and more advanced treatment in the area of cartilage injuries, we have developed a new technique that consists in meniscal retensioning to create a kind of \"Autotransplant\" that will return the extruded meniscus to its anatomical position.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What did the study consist of?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The study consisted in describing a new surgical technique for the treatment of <strong>osteoarthritis<\/strong> knee associated with meniscal extrusion with the objective of reestablishing and centering the anatomic meniscal position through a <strong>meniscal retensioning <\/strong>thus ensuring its physiological functions in preserving the degeneration of the <strong>articular cartilage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><br \/>\nWhy this technique?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>meniscal extrusion<\/strong> (when the peripheral portion of the meniscus extends beyond the margin of the tibia) results in changes in the normal biomechanics of the knee and loss of the functions that the meniscus performs in absorbing and redistributing forces in the knee, potentially leading to the onset and progression of <strong>osteoarthritis<\/strong> of the knee.<\/li>\n<li>This technique of <strong>meniscal retensioning<\/strong> allows the meniscus to be centered and repositioned in its anatomical position, which will allow it to reestablish its functions in maintaining the homeostasis of the knee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What are the advantages of this technique?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The procedure can be considered as a meniscal \"autotransplantation\", reestablishing the native biomechanical and physiological functions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Menisco\"><strong>meniscus<\/strong>.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The procedure for <strong>meniscal retensioning<\/strong> is minimally invasive and can relieve pain symptoms and prevent the progression of osteoarthritis.<\/li>\n<li>It postpones the need for partial or total knee replacement.<\/li>\n<li>The surgery can easily be used concomitantly with other surgical procedures (such as tibial or femoral realignment osteotomies, ligament reconstructions, or cartilage procedures).<\/li>\n<li>It restores meniscal coverage, decreases contact with cartilage or subchondral bone, and restores joint space in the affected femorotibial compartment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-responsive\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iskkYPDOZZA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\"><\/span><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>You can access the full description and video of the technique via the following link: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2212628718301968\">https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2212628718301968<\/a><\/div>\n<p>We invite our readers who wish to deepen their knowledge about the treatment of osteoarticular lesions to attend the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academiaclinicadragao.com\/jornadas-2019\/\">VI Atlantic Health Conference<\/a> Which will take place on November 15 and 16, 2019.
