Muscle Injuries 360°

Introduction

Muscle injuries are among the most frequent and clinically demanding problems in sport. Their management extends well beyond identifying the injured structure. Clinical presentation, tissue involvement, injury mechanism, imaging findings, biological healing, functional capacity and sport-specific demands must all be interpreted within the context of the individual athlete. Decisions regarding prognosis, rehabilitation progression and return to performance therefore require the integration of multiple sources of information rather than reliance on any single test, classification or protocol.

Muscle Injuries 360° is an advanced, clinically oriented programme designed to provide an integrated understanding of sports-related muscle injury across the continuum from epidemiology, risk and injury mechanisms to assessment, diagnosis, management, rehabilitation and return to performance. Its central premise is that high-quality clinical decision-making depends not only on what clinicians know, but on their ability to critically interpret evidence, reconcile findings from different domains and apply that information appropriately to the individual athlete.

The programme begins with the scientific foundations of muscle injury, examining sport-specific epidemiology and risk factors, muscle structure and injury mechanisms, classification, biomechanics and prevention. It then addresses contemporary diagnostic assessment through clinical examination, MRI and ultrasound, including emerging quantitative and advanced imaging approaches. Particular attention is given to the assessment of hamstring, adductor, quadriceps/rectus femoris, calf/triceps surae and pelvitrochanteric presentations, while upper-limb muscle injuries and specific considerations across different sporting populations broaden the clinical perspective.

From diagnosis, the curriculum progresses to the biological and therapeutic dimensions of recovery. Muscle healing, youth avulsion injuries, surgical considerations, clinical precautions and red flags, orthobiologics and neuromuscular assessment are integrated with muscle-specific rehabilitation and case-based clinical reasoning. Nutrition and psychological readiness are considered alongside physical recovery, recognising that successful return to sport requires more than resolution of symptoms or structural healing.

The later stages of the programme focus on the transition from rehabilitation to performance. Participants examine load and performance monitoring, GPS principles and sport-specific field-based progression in football, rugby and track and field. The programme culminates in multidisciplinary, muscle-specific clinical case roundtables, bringing together imaging, medical management and rehabilitation perspectives to examine complex clinical decisions from complementary professional viewpoints.

A defining strength of Muscle Injuries 360° is its multidisciplinary international faculty, bringing together extensive expertise in sports medicine, diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation, sports science, research and high-performance practice. Throughout the programme, participants are exposed to different professional perspectives and approaches to clinical reasoning, creating an opportunity to examine not only current evidence, but also how that evidence can be interpreted and applied when clinical decisions are complex and certainty is limited.

An optional practical component extends this framework into applied learning through ultrasound assessment of major muscle groups, field-based physical and metabolic assessment, and manual dynamometry for neuromuscular evaluation.

Target Audience

Medical doctors, physiotherapists, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, sports scientists, and other health and performance professionals involved in the prevention, assessment, management, rehabilitation and return to performance of athletes with sports-related muscle injuries.

Overall Course Aim

To enable participants to critically integrate contemporary scientific evidence, clinical assessment, diagnostic information, rehabilitation principles and performance data in the prevention, assessment and management of sports-related muscle injuries, supporting individualised, evidence-informed decision-making from injury occurrence through return to performance.

OBJETIVOS

  Analyse the epidemiology and risk factors associated with muscle injury across different sporting contexts and populations.
  Relate muscle anatomy, tissue biology, injury mechanisms and classification to clinical presentation, prognosis and management.
  Integrate history, physical examination and relevant imaging findings in the assessment and differential diagnosis of common sports-related muscle injuries, including hamstring, quadriceps/rectus femoris, adductor, calf/triceps surae and pelvitrochanteric presentations.
  Critically appraise the role and limitations of conventional and emerging imaging approaches, including MRI, ultrasound and advanced quantitative imaging techniques, within clinical decision-making.
  Analyse biomechanical, loading and athlete-specific factors associated with muscle injury and reinjury, and relate them to prevention, rehabilitation and progression towards performance.
  Evaluate management options across the muscle-injury continuum, including rehabilitation, surgical considerations, orthobiological interventions, clinical red flags and neuromuscular assessment, in relation to the individual clinical context.
  Design evidence-informed, criteria-based rehabilitation strategies for major muscle-injury presentations, integrating tissue recovery, symptoms, strength, function, progressive loading and sport-specific demands.
  Integrate nutritional, psychological and performance-related considerations into rehabilitation and return-to-performance planning.
  Interpret relevant load and performance information, including GPS-derived data and field-based performance measures, to inform progression through the later stages of rehabilitation and return to sport.
  Synthesize clinical, imaging, rehabilitation and performance information in complex cases, and communicate a well-reasoned, individualised management strategy within a multidisciplinary team.

Focused ultrasound assessment of the hamstrings, quadriceps, calf complex and adductors, with emphasis on anatomical localisation, lesion characterisation, tissue involvement and clinical interpretation.

Field-Based Physical and Metabolic Assessment | 2h

Applied on-field assessment of key physical and metabolic performance variables, including acceleration, maximal speed exposure, deceleration, repeated high-intensity actions and sport-specific workload profiling.

Neuromuscular Assessment Using Manual Dynamometry | 2h

Practical assessment of neuromuscular function using handheld/manual dynamometers, including strength profiling, inter-limb asymmetries, force production and clinical decision-making during rehabilitation and return-to-performance progression.

Classes will be uploaded to Moodle within 2 to 3 working days after the live session and will remain available for viewing until one month after the end of the course. Accordingly, recorded sessions made available after the live broadcast (whether exclusively online or via television) will no longer be accessible 45 days after the final live session of the course.

Important note: Please be reminded that a minimum attendance rate of 70% is required, which may be achieved either through live online participation or by watching the recorded sessions. Kindly note that recorded sessions must be viewed at normal speed, as content watched in fast-forward (1.5x or 2x) will not be counted towards attendance and may therefore compromise final certification.

To receive the diploma, participants must achieve a minimum attendance rate of 70% and obtain a minimum score of 9.5 out of 20 on the multiple-choice test.
