Multiprofessional Approach to Lipedema: Four Views, One Care

Multiprofessional Approach to Lipedema: Four Views, One Care” is a training course designed to respond to an increasingly evident need in clinical practice: to understand lipedema in an in-depth, up-to-date and truly integrated way. This condition, which is often underdiagnosed and undervalued, requires a rigorous and multidimensional reading that goes beyond the isolated vision of each professional area.

We have brought together a vascular surgeon, a nutritionist, a physiotherapist and a sports science specialist in a structure that allows participants to understand lipedema in all its complexity: diagnosis and clinical criteria, the role of medical, conservative and surgical treatment, nutrition, exercise and movement strategies, physiotherapeutic intervention and shared, informed decision-making. Each session is designed to offer solid, applicable knowledge in line with the latest scientific evidence.

This course is especially relevant for nutritionists and physiotherapists who want to deepen their skills, differentiate their practice and raise the level of care provided to their patients. It is also an opportunity for all health professionals who wish to better understand this condition, improve their clinical skills and integrate a truly person-centered intervention model into their daily practice.

OBJECTIVES

Understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of lipedema and identify the factors that condition pain, inflammation, progression and the functional impact of the disease, establishing a common basis for informed clinical practice.
Recognizing the signs and symptoms that guide clinical diagnosis, distinguishing lipedema from other confusable conditions, and understanding the role of different professionals in defining the therapeutic plan.
Apply evidence-based physiotherapy intervention strategies to optimize mobility, functionality and symptom management, including pain, edema and limitations in activities of daily living.
Evaluate and plan clinically safe and effective physical exercise programs, adapted to the stage, symptoms and individual abilities of each person with lipedema.
Integrate scientifically supported nutritional approaches in the management of lipedema, understanding the relationship between diet, inflammation, water retention, metabolic behavior and quality of life.
Develop skills to guide people with lipedema in adopting combined strategies (nutrition, physiotherapy, exercise, self-care), reinforcing autonomy and self-management skills.
Analyze and discuss complex clinical cases, promoting interdisciplinary coordination and decision-making based on good practice, ensuring consistency between diagnosis, intervention and follow-up

Nutritionists and physiotherapists.

The final classification in the course will result from the quantitative classification obtained by the final exam. The assessment comprises the answers to a 20-question multiple-choice exam. Each correct answer contributes 1 point to the final classification. The exam will be held at the end of the course.

The final evaluation of each course is expressed through a classification on a numerical scale from 0 to 20 points, with approval being considered as obtaining a minimum of 10 points.

The final classification of the course can be accompanied by a qualitative mention, expressed on the following scale: Sufficient (10 to 13), Good (14 and 15), Very Good (16 and 17) and Excellent (18 to 20).

According to the Portuguese legislation (DL 42/2005 of 22 February), grades below 10, on a scale from 0 to 20, imply failure.

At the end of the course, an evaluation instrument will be applied to measure the participants’ satisfaction with the training process and the conditions for carrying out the course, aiming at possible improvement actions.

At the end of the course, a Professional Training Certificate will be issued, in accordance with current legislation (Ordinance No. 474/2010 of 8 July), to all participants who successfully complete the vocational training. This certificate, as well as a diploma, will be made available in digital format in the participant’s area, on the EMSaúde website, within a maximum period of 30 working days, after the end date of the course. If the student does not succeed, a Certificate of Attendance in Vocational Training will be issued.

Lessons will be uploaded to Moodle 2 or 3 working days after the live broadcast and will be available to view for up to one month after the end of the course. Thus, recorded lessons, made available after the live broadcast (exclusively online or televised), will no longer be accessible 31 days after the last live session broadcast of the course.

Important note: we remind you that there is a minimum attendance of 70%, which is counted both for live online presence and deferred viewing. Please note that deferred viewing must be carried out at normal speed, since content viewed at fast forward (1.5x or 2x) is not counted for attendance purposes and may therefore compromise final certification.
