Introduction

Muscle injuries are among the most common and clinically challenging problems in sports. Their management goes far beyond simply identifying the injured structure. Clinical presentation, tissue involvement, mechanism of injury, imaging findings, biological healing, functional capacity, and sport-specific demands must all be interpreted within the context of the individual athlete. Decisions regarding prognosis, rehabilitation progression, and return to competition therefore require the integration of multiple sources of information rather than reliance on any single test, classification, or protocol.

Muscle Injuries 360° is an advanced, clinically oriented program designed to provide an integrated understanding of sports-related muscle injuries across the continuum—from epidemiology, risk, and injury mechanisms to assessment, diagnosis, management, rehabilitation, and return to performance. Its central premise is that high-quality clinical decision-making depends not only on what clinicians know, but also on their ability to critically interpret evidence, reconcile findings from different fields, and apply that information appropriately to the individual athlete.

The program begins with the scientific foundations of muscle injury, examining sport-specific epidemiology and risk factors, muscle structure and injury mechanisms, classification, biomechanics, and prevention. It then addresses contemporary diagnostic assessment through clinical examination, MRI, and ultrasound, including emerging quantitative and advanced imaging approaches. Particular attention is given to the assessment of hamstring, adductor, quadriceps/rectus femoris, calf/triceps surae, and pelvitrochanteric injuries, while upper-limb muscle injuries and specific considerations across different athletic populations broaden the clinical perspective.

Starting with diagnosis, the curriculum moves on to the biological and therapeutic aspects of recovery. Muscle healing, avulsion injuries in young athletes, surgical considerations, clinical precautions and red flags, orthobiologics, and neuromuscular assessment are integrated with muscle-specific rehabilitation and case-based clinical reasoning. Nutrition and psychological readiness are considered alongside physical recovery, recognizing that a successful return to sport requires more than just the resolution of symptoms or structural healing.

The later stages of the program focus on the transition from rehabilitation to performance. Participants examine load and performance monitoring, GPS principles, and sport-specific field-based progression in soccer, rugby, and track and field. The program culminates in multidisciplinary, muscle-specific clinical case roundtables, bringing together imaging, medical management, and rehabilitation perspectives to examine complex clinical decisions from complementary professional viewpoints.

A defining strength of Muscle Injuries 360° is its multidisciplinary international faculty, which brings together extensive expertise in sports medicine, diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation, sports science, research, and high-performance practice. Throughout the program, participants are exposed to different professional perspectives and approaches to clinical reasoning, creating an opportunity to examine not only current evidence but also how that evidence can be interpreted and applied when clinical decisions are complex and certainty is limited.

An optional practical component extends this framework into applied learning through ultrasound assessment of major muscle groups, field-based physical and metabolic assessment, and manual dynamometry for neuromuscular evaluation.

Target Audience

Medical doctors, physical therapists, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, sports scientists, and other health and performance professionals involved in the prevention, assessment, management, rehabilitation, and return to performance of athletes with sports-related muscle injuries.

Overall Course Objective

To enable participants to critically integrate contemporary scientific evidence, clinical assessment, diagnostic information, rehabilitation principles, and performance data in the prevention, assessment, and management of sports-related muscle injuries, supporting individualized, evidence-based decision-making from the onset of an injury through return to performance.

OBJECTIVES

  Analyze the epidemiology and risk factors associated with muscle injuries across different sports settings and populations.
  Relate muscle anatomy, tissue biology, injury mechanisms, and classification to clinical presentation, prognosis, and management.
  Integrate medical history, physical examination, and relevant imaging findings into the assessment and differential diagnosis of common sports-related muscle injuries, including injuries to the hamstrings, quadriceps/rectus femoris, adductors, calf/triceps surae, and the pelvitrochanteric region.
  Critically evaluate the role and limitations of conventional and emerging imaging approaches—including MRI, ultrasound, and advanced quantitative imaging techniques—in clinical decision-making.
  Analyze biomechanical, loading, and athlete-specific factors associated with muscle injury and reinjury, and relate them to prevention, rehabilitation, and performance progression.
  Evaluate management options across the muscle injury continuum, including rehabilitation, surgical considerations, orthobiological interventions, clinical red flags, and neuromuscular assessment, in relation to the individual clinical context.
  Design evidence-based, criteria-based rehabilitation strategies for major muscle injuries, integrating tissue recovery, symptoms, strength, function, progressive loading, and sport-specific demands.
  Integrate nutritional, psychological, and performance-related considerations into rehabilitation and return-to-performance planning.
  Interpret relevant load and performance data, including GPS-derived data and field-based performance measures, to guide progression through the later stages of rehabilitation and return to sport.
  Synthesize clinical, imaging, rehabilitation, and performance data in complex cases, and communicate a well-reasoned, individualized management strategy to a multidisciplinary team.
