Dental Emergency Care in Sports

Participating in sports—regardless of the sport, competitive level, or age of the participants—is associated with an inherent risk of injury resulting from training and competition. Among the most common injuries are musculoskeletal injuries, as well as head and neck injuries, which account for a significant proportion of sports-related injuries.

In this context, orofacial trauma is of particular importance, as it may involve injuries to the teeth, the soft tissues of the oral cavity, the supporting structures, and the jawbones. In addition to functional, aesthetic, and psychological consequences, these injuries can compromise an athlete’s prognosis if they are not properly addressed immediately after the accident.

Scientific evidence shows that initial intervention at the site of the injury can be critical to the success of definitive treatment, particularly in situations such as tooth avulsion, dislocations, and certain dental fractures. However, many of the professionals who accompany athletes on the field lack specific training to recognize these situations and implement the most appropriate immediate measures.

This training program is designed to equip professionals who work with athletes to recognize and respond appropriately to the most common dental emergencies in a sports setting, promoting an initial approach based on scientific evidence* and ensuring proper referral for specialized treatment.

*Training based on the recommendations of the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT), adapted for use in a sports setting.

OBJECTIVES

  Understand the fundamental principles of sports dentistry, the anatomy of the orofacial region, and the initial management of dental injuries in a sports setting;
  Recognize the main types of orofacial injuries associated with sports;
  Identify the differences in the initial management of trauma in permanent and primary dentition;
  Assess a dental emergency in a sports setting, recognizing the signs and symptoms that require immediate action;
  Apply, within the scope of their responsibilities, the protocols recommended by the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) for the initial management of major dental injuries:
  Apply the appropriate procedures for the handling, storage, and transport of avulsed teeth and dental fragments, thereby helping to optimize the clinical prognosis;
  Refer the athlete, in an appropriate and timely manner, for specialized dental care.

The final classification in the course will result from the quantitative classification obtained by the final exam. The assessment comprises the answers to a 20-question multiple-choice exam. Each correct answer contributes 1 point to the final classification. The exam will be held at the end of the course.

The final evaluation of each course is expressed through a classification on a numerical scale from 0 to 20 points, with approval being considered as obtaining a minimum of 10 points.

The final classification of the course can be accompanied by a qualitative mention, expressed on the following scale: Sufficient (10 to 13), Good (14 and 15), Very Good (16 and 17) and Excellent (18 to 20).

According to the Portuguese legislation (DL 42/2005 of 22 February), grades below 10, on a scale from 0 to 20, imply failure.

At the end of the course, an evaluation instrument will be applied to measure the participants’ satisfaction with the training process and the conditions for carrying out the course, aiming at possible improvement actions.

At the end of the course, a Professional Training Certificate will be issued, in accordance with current legislation (Ordinance No. 474/2010 of 8 July), to all participants who successfully complete the vocational training. This certificate, as well as a diploma, will be made available in digital format in the participant’s area, on the EMSaúde website, within a maximum period of 30 working days, after the end date of the course. If the student does not succeed, a Certificate of Attendance in Vocational Training will be issued.

Sports Physicians, Dentists, Nurses, Physical Therapists, Osteopaths, Strength and Conditioning Coaches, Sports Science Coaches, and all professionals who work with athletes during training or competition.

Lessons will be uploaded to Moodle 2 or 3 working days after the live broadcast and will be available to view for up to one month after the end of the course. Thus, recorded lessons, made available after the live broadcast (exclusively online or televised), will no longer be accessible 31 days after the last live session broadcast of the course.

Important note: we remind you that there is a minimum attendance of 70%, which is counted both for live online presence and deferred viewing. Please note that deferred viewing must be carried out at normal speed, since content viewed at fast forward (1.5x or 2x) is not counted for attendance purposes and may therefore compromise final certification.
