PRESCRIPTION OF PHYSICAL EXERCISE COURSE

Fundamentals and Applications

The prescription of physical exercise comprises professional acts of responsibility and must be carried out by qualified professionals with specific knowledge and skills. The adherence and compliance of society to structured exercise plans, particularly adjusted to the individual and clinical context, has an extraordinary and measurable transforming potential, from the chemical and cellular level to the organism in its anatomical-functional unit.

TO DEVELOP SKILLS FOR A SAFE AND EFFECTIVE PRESCRIPTION OF PHYSICAL EXERCISE, THE OBJECTIVES WERE ESTABLISHED AS THE FOLLOWING:

  • Recognize physical activity as a preventive, prophylactic and therapeutic tool: its main indications and the most appropriate method for its prescription;
  • Know the national and international strategic plans for the promotion of physical activity in the population;
  • Know how to assess and stratify the cardiovascular risk of each individual before starting an exercise program;
  • Know the intervention model for behavioural change and the main characteristics of motivational interviewing;
  • Identify the general principles of exercise prescription;
  • Recognize the main technological tools for prescribing and monitoring physical activity;
  • Know how to characterize the main vulnerable groups of the population and their implications for exercise prescription;
  • Understand the specificities of the most prevalent pathologies in the population and the therapeutic effect of exercise on the latter.

The practice of physical activity is a right enshrined in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic: “Everyone has the right to physical culture and sports”. In turn, the safe and effective prescription of exercise and the monitoring of sports practice is a must and, depending on the individual, collective and/or clinical context, can be done by different professionals, such as sports science and physical education professionals, doctors and physiotherapists. The adequacy of the first contact stems from the individual and clinical circumstances of the people as well as from the technical-scientific precedents that define the professional to take on the intervention.
Science supports, with high levels of evidence and recommendation, the positive impact on the physical, motor, mental and emotional domains throughout people’s entire life cycle.

THOSE WHO PRACTICE PHYSICAL EXERCISE, WITHOUT EXCEPTIONS AND INEVITABILITIES AND IF WELL PRESCRIBED AND ACCOMPANIED, TEND TO BE:

  • Healthy
  • Detainer of a superior structural and functional development
  • More resilient to disease consequences
  • More emotionally and socially capable and resilient
  • Seen as role models and, as such, agents of change

Given the negative socio-economic impact related to a sedentary lifestyle, take the example of non-communicable chronic diseases, and the inappropriate practice of physical exercise and, on the other hand, the extraordinary benefits that the practice of physical activity and sport can bring, it is urgent the structuring and attendance of courses that contribute to change and/or optimization of the practice of professionals qualified to prescribe physical activity. Changing professional practice for the better, contributing qualified professionals to prescribe physical exercise in a safe and effective manner and, ultimately, for the well-being and health of society, is the main purpose of this course to which we are inviting you.
Let’s learn and get moving!
